A quotation can be accurate and still be misunderstood if the buying unit is unclear. When one person means a piece and another means a set, the order quantity, price and carton count can all appear wrong. Agree on the units before comparing offers.

Piece: one individual item

A piece normally means a single item, but the item must be defined. One bottle may be one piece. For a product supplied with several components, ask whether the quoted piece means the complete product or a separate component.

Set: a defined collection sold together

A set groups items into one sales unit. A six piece spoon set contains six spoons if that is the stated set content. The price per set should not be read as the price per spoon.

Similarly, the Vision fridge bottle six piece set describes a group of bottles. Keep the number of sets and the number of individual bottles separate in the buying record.

Inner pack: an intermediate grouping

An inner pack holds a number of sales units inside the larger shipping carton. Not every product uses one. It can help with organisation and handling, but you should request the actual packing arrangement for the chosen model.

Master carton: the outer shipping pack

A master carton contains a specified number of pieces, sets or inner packs. The number alone is incomplete unless you know which unit it counts. Ask for a packing statement that describes every level that is used.

For example, an imaginary spoon order might be packed as six spoons per set, four sets per inner pack and six inner packs per master carton. That carton contains 24 sets and 144 individual spoons. This example explains the arithmetic; it is not the packing specification of a National Kitchenware product.

Master quantity is not automatically MOQ

MOQ means minimum order quantity. It is a commercial requirement that the supplier should confirm. A master carton quantity describes how products are packed. The two may happen to match, but you should not assume they do.

Ask whether the minimum applies to a model, colour, printed design or the total order. Also ask whether quantities must be ordered in complete cartons and whether mixed cartons are available.

Use this wording in your next enquiry

“Please quote for the stated number of sales units. Confirm the pieces in each set, sales units per inner pack, inner packs per master carton and total individual pieces. Please also state the minimum order quantity and whether the price is per piece or per set.”

Once the units are confirmed, calculate product value from the quoted sales unit and price. Calculate carton counts separately using the agreed packing. If the result is not a whole carton, ask how the balance will be handled.

Make receiving easier

Use the same unit descriptions on your purchase order, packing list and warehouse record. Clear carton labels help the receiving team count stock without guessing. A few precise words at the enquiry stage can prevent a much larger problem after delivery.
